It may not be necessary for you to perform a windshield replacement if the condition of the windshield can still be repaired.  If the damage is not even the side of a money bill, it may be eligible for a simple repair.  

First, make sure that you shop around for a company to do your repair.  Ask your friends if they have any recommendations.  Ask three to four companies to get a well rounded idea of the quality of service you want before you make a choice.  

Second, make an appointment.  They can come to you as early as the next day.   Allot about two hours because service takes about thirty minutes, and it is generally recommended for you to let your car stand for an hour before you use it again.   Make sure that you fully map out your day to maximize your time.  Now, it’s not necessary for you to wait around for you car to finish, but the technician will need keys to your car to service it.  It is safe to do this if your car is being repaired right there in their office.  If not, also make sure you have a covered/sheltered area for the technician to work in, especially during winter.  It’s harder to perform repairs during bad weather conditions.  Technicians usually call before they show up.

Repair of the windshield starts off with cleaning the damaged area thoroughly, and then treating it with specifically manufactured resin with the use of special tools.  While being repaired, protective drapes are used to ensure that no damages happen to other parts of your car.  

The repaired area will not usually be invisible.  There will be traces of the damage but for sure its presence will be less obvious than when it was before the repair.  

After service includes returning of all your stickers disturbed during the repair, return of the rear view mirror if they too it off, and vacuuming your entire car just in case there is a chance of glass  shards falling off during service.
